After a summer with no clear-cut runway hits, OMI's "Cheerleader" was officially named the song of the summer, according to Billboard. The Jamaican reggae/pop artist's smash hit won the honor and beat a number of other prominent songs for the top spot.

Billboards songs of the summer chart tracked the most popular songs based on cumulative performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100 chart from Memorial Day through Labor Day. OMI was the third rookie to claim the top song of the summer in the last four years. Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" earned the top spot in 2014 and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" took the honor in 2012.

The second biggest song of the summer was Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth's "See You Again." The song came in a strong second place due to the fact that it was released before Memorial Day. Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" came in at third place and was followed by Fetty Wap's "Trap Queen."

"Watch Me" by Silento rounded out the top five summer hits of 2015.

The song "Cheerleader" was originally released in 2012 as a light reggae number before it was re-worked into a danceable version by German producer Felix Jaehn, reported Entertainment Weekly.

"The story is so simple with its level of innocence. It's a conversation: 'Look, this is how I see you, and I appreciate this about you,'" the singer said about his hit song.
