David Moyes enters his first Champions League match as Manchester United's new boss.  The ex-Everton boss is optimistic about his squad's chances this year of advancing from the group stage and making a deep run in the tournament, BBC reports.

"I've been excited about it ever since I've joined Manchester United," Moyes told BBC.  "I've been there before with Everton - we didn't quite make the group stages but this is different.  This is a club that's used to getting to the latter stages."

United is the favorite to reach the knockout stage from Group A, which includes Real Sociedad and Shakhtar Donetsk.  Despite being the early favorite, Moyes isn't underestimating his competition.

"You used to be able to always pick out the group winners but in the last few years that has become more difficult," Moyes said.  "It is more unpredictable than it was.  We've got a leading team from Germany, one from Spain and we go to Donetsk to play Shakhtar.  It's a tough group."

Leverkusen nabbed a spot in the Champions League by placing third last season in the German top-flight.  The team has won four of its last five league matches under boss Sami Hyypia.

Both teams have players out and in doubt, SBNation reports.

For Manchester United, Darren Fletcher is out with an illness.  Danny Welbeck (knee), Phil Jones (ankle), Shinji Kagawa (flu) and Rafael (hamstring) are in doubt.

Bayer Leverkusen will be without Niklas Lamb (ankle) and Dominik Kohr (knee).  Lars Bender (hip) and Gonzalo castro (hamstring) are in doubt.
