At least five Palestinians were injured after Israeli security forces carried out a military raid on a refugee camp in the West Bank's Jenin city Monday night.

An Israeli soldier was also injured in the raid, which was conducted jointly by the Israel Defense Forces, the Shin Bet and the Special Police Unit, according to Jerusalem Post. The injured soldier is in stable condition and getting treatment at Rambam medical center in Haifa.

The Palestinian media reported that the target of the raid was a senior official of the Islamic Jihad group, Middle East Eye reported. Gunfight and violence clashes erupted between Palestinian refugees and Israeli soldiers during the raid.  

"During the activity, after repeated calls to surrender himself to the forces, security forces demolished the house in which the wanted terrorist was suspectedly hiding," the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said in a statement, according to The Times of Israel.

"Palestinian gunmen exchanged heavy fire with Israeli soldiers and five Palestinians were wounded with rubber bullets and taken to hospital," a Palestinian security official told the Associated Press.

Majdi Abu al-Heija, a Hamas leader, and his brother were reportedly detained in the raid, but Bassam al-Saadi, a senior Hamas operative and the main target of the operation, evaded the arrest.
