A manhunt is underway as police search for three armed suspects in the suburbs north of Chicago after a police officer was shot on Tuesday in the village of Fox Lake.

Local media had reported that the officer in the incident had died, using local law enforcement as a source, however Lake County sheriff's detective Christopher Covelli did not confirm that information at a news conference hours after the shooting, according to Reuters.

"I have no information on the officer's condition," Covelli said, asking area residents to remain inside and report suspicious activity.

"We have three offenders at large" who are believed to be armed, he told reporters.

The incident happened around 7:50 a.m. when the officer radioed he was pursuing three suspects, after looking into their "suspicious activity." Police lost radio contact with the officer, who was later found with a gunshot wound, according to CBS News.

Police do have a profile of the three suspects, however, and describe them as two white males and a black male.

Residents have been asked to remain inside their homes and businesses, reported CNN. Trains were stopped, roads were blocked and schools were on lockdown as well.

McHenry and Lake county Sheriff's offices were involved in the search, which included the use of dogs and helicopters to try to track the suspects.
