Justin Bieber broke down in tears after he performed at the MTV VMAs for the first time in five years. The pop star preformed his new single "What Do You Mean" off his highly anticipated new album before he got emotional Sunday night. The performance, in which he also sung his hit song "Where Are U Now," was his first major awards show performance in two years.

At the end of his time on stage, Bieber spent time touching the hands of fans in the audience before a voiceover from him talked about how "life is a journey" and "when you fall it allows you to get up," reported The Hollywood Reporter. The 21-year-old also told viewers to believe in faith and find their purpose. After the inspirational speech he bent over in tears.

VMA host Miley Cyrus cut Bieber's emotional reaction short when she joked about his age. "Wow, I was going to keep this jacket on, but now that I know that Justin can fly ... Hi Justin call me when you're legal!" Cyrus said, according to the New York Daily News.

The last time he took the VMA stage was in 2010 where he performed a medley of "Baby," "Somebody to Love" and "U Smile." Bieber's next album was reported to be released this November, according to Entertainment Weekly.
