Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Thursday that for the first time in Facebook's history, the social networking site had a billion users active in a single day.

The milestone, which was recorded Monday, according to Zuckerberg, is roughly equivalent to about one in seven people on Earth, according to CNN.

"When we talk about our financials, we use average numbers, but this is different," Zuckerberg wrote. "This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the whole world."

The observed figure is different from the daily user numbers Facebook reveals each quarter when it reports its financial results, reported CBS News. Those numbers represent the average numbers of daily users, counted over a 30-day period.

In its earnings update last month, Facebook said that it had about 1.5 billion users logging on at least once a month, which is a 13 percent increase from last year, according to Yahoo! News.

Zuckerberg said Monday's milestone is significant because people use Facebook as a platform to interact with one another.

"A more open and connected world is a better world. It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values," he concluded.
