The Savannah State University had been placed in a temporary lock down until after midnight local time because of a shooting that left one injured. A police investigation is now being pursued to investigate the motive behind the shooting, according to the Associated Press.

Loretta Heyward, a spokeswoman for the Georgia-based university had confirmed in an issued statement that someone was injured by a gunshot after which a lockdown had been imposed, reported WRDW-TV Augusta, GA.

The injured male, who has not been identified, was taken to the hospital for treatment, but it has not been clarified if the victim is a student or a school personnel, the Guardian reported.

Heyward told the Associated Press that she was not informed if arrests had been made. No other details are available at this time.

According to reports, historically the campus is situated in the heart of Savannah -- Georgia's oldest city.
