TCU has already suffered a major blow early in the season with the loss of quarterback Casey Pachall.  With the senior out indefinitely after undergoing surgery, sophomore Trevone Boykin will be asked to lead the offense on Thursday against Texas Tech, ESPN reports.

TCU began the season with a loss to LSU, 37-27, before bouncing back and dealing Southeastern Louisiana a 38-17 loss.  Boykin went 9-of-13 for 133 yards and two touchdowns in their win over Southeastern Louisiana.  Despite coming away with the win, Boykin knows his team will have to play better against their Big 12 rival.

"We didn't play to our level of ability," Boykin said, via ESPN.  "... We have to do way better next week against Texas Tech."

TCU coach Gary Patterson is optimistic about Boykin starting under center, but admitted Boykin's is a different kind of quarterback than Pachall.

"He just makes some plays with his legs that Casey hasn't, but Casey makes some plays with his arm that Trevone doesn't do," Patterson told reporters.  "But it's two weeks in a row he came in and did some good things."

Starting opposite of Boykin is walk-on freshman Baker Mayfield, who's already thrown for 780 yards and seven touchdowns.  Originally filling in for Michael Brewer, Mayfield is making a strong case to remain the starter for the season.

"Anytime you have a true freshman in a new system who didn't get ehre too long ago come in and move the ball like he's moved it, that's exciting," Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters.  "Hopefully, he'll just keep getting better."
