The Atlanta Falcons are set at the starting quarterback position with Matt Ryan but they are apparently not too happy about their backup position as of right now. T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree are the other two quarterbacks on the roster but now the Falcons are reportedly bringing in Rex Grossman for a workout and a physical on Tuesday afternoon and they could possibly sign him to a deal according to Vaughn McClure of ESPN.

The Falcons have not been pleased with the way their backups have played so far in the preseason so they appear desperate in the backup quarterback area. Potentially bringing in Grossman is certainly a desperation move as he hasn't played in an NFL regular season game since the 2011 season when he was 5-8 as the Washington Redskins starter. Grossman was on Washington's roster in 2012 and 2013 but didn't appear in a single game.

The New York Jets previously had interest in bringing in Grossman after Geno Smith had his jaw broken but they decided against it and brought in Matt Flynn instead. Grossman reportedly was said to have an injury when the Jets called him asking about his availability.

Kyle Shanahan is currently the offensive coordinator in Atlanta and he has a level of familiarity with Grossman from their days together in Washington. Shanahan has said he loves Grossman because of his toughness so he likely had a lot to do with the decision to have him in for a visit.

Grossman just turned 35 years old and it is not clear what kind of shape he is in but if he has a decent workout he likely has a good shot to get a deal because of the current backups poor performances so far this preseason. For his career Grossman has a record of 25-22 including the year he led the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006. Grossman has completed 55 percent of his passes and has 56 touchdowns compared to 60 interceptions in his career and will likely have no impact this season if he does get a deal.
