A drug-related search in Phoenix, Ariz. ended in a touching animal rescue after officers and animal rescuers spent 10 hours freeing a puppy from a sewage pipe.

Police officers arrived at an Arizona home Thursday morning to conduct a drug related search, but they also found an adult female dog and two dead puppies, according to AZ Central.

They then discovered another puppy still alive and trapped in a drainage pipe located outside the house, and the Arizona Humane Society sent rescuers to help free the tiny animal.

With the assistance of a plumbing tool used to look inside, as well as some intuitive thinking, the rescuers were able to successfully locate the pup and extract the shaking animal from the pipe, according to Fox News.

"We were trying to make contraptions out of coat hangers," said one rescue worker.

Arizona Humane Society officials say the animal is a pit bull terrier mix that's only one or two weeks old.

The little pup, with eyes still closed, was united with its mother after being separated for nearly 24 hours, ABC News reported.

The puppy's condition is being monitored, and it's receiving medical treatment by a local animal hospital.

The puppy and its mother are thought to be strays.
