Seven people were shot at in a drive-by shooting near a Boys and Girls Club in western New York on Wednesday, killing three and injuring four others, according to NBC News.

A gunman opened fire into a crowd that had gathered after a basketball game in Rochester at approximately 11:30 p.m. EDT.

"Seven victims were shot and we've now confirmed that three were deceased," said Rochester police chief Michael Ciminelli.

"At least one or more occupants in the car fired shots from the car into the crowd that had gathered after a basketball game and the Boys and Girls Club," Ciminelli said. "At this point, there was no problem at the Boys and Girls Club. There was no problem with the basketball game."

Authorities said they have no reason to believe the shooting was related to the basketball game and have not yet released the identities of the victims or the conditions of those injured in the incident, CBS News reported.

A large crowd gathered near the scene of the drive-by shooting in the early hours of Thursday and emotions ran high as family and friends of the deceased consoled each other.

"I could hear people screaming and crying," said a newspaper photographer, who arrived at the crime scene to cover the aftermath of the shooting. "A mother of one of the victims arrived and collapsed on the ground screaming, 'No, no, no!' These are sounds I won't forget."

Ciminelli has made the investigation a top priority and has urged anyone in the community with information about the shooting to come forward.
