"Saturday Night Live" will kick off season 41 with hosts Miley Cyrus and Amy Schumer, but perhaps the most surprising choice of the upcoming season is Tracy Morgan's return to studio 8H on Oct. 17.

Morgan has made only a few public appearances since the tragic car accident in June 2014 that left his friend and mentor James McNair dead. Morgan's "30 Rock" co-stars Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin paid special tribute to their friend during the "SNL 40" special this past February.

"Saturday Night Live" will premiere on Oct. 3 with host (and most likely musical guest) Cyrus followed by Schumer on Oct. 10. Musical acts for Schumer and Morgan's episodes have not been announced.

Cyrus previously hosted in 2011 and 2013, the first with The Strokes as her musical guest and the second time she pulled double duty. The "Wrecking Ball" singer is also hosting the MTV VMAs this year on Aug. 30 and preparing a follow-up album to 2013's "Bangerz."

Schumer is coming off her biggest year ever with the success of her Comedy Central show, "Inside Amy Schumer" and her hit comedy movie, "Trainwreck." She also received 2015 Emmy nominations for acting in "Inside Amy Schumer" and directing the episode that featured her "12 Angry Men" parody.

Morgan made his first TV appearance earlier this summer on NBC in an interview on "Today" with Matt Lauer. He also enjoyed a Yankees game with his family earlier this month, waving to the crowd who gave him an incredibly warm welcome.

"Saturday Night Live" will premiere on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 11:30 p.m. on NBC.
