Longtime couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt got married in a private ceremony last year in the South of France. Instead of spending their honeymoon on a romantic beach somewhere, the couple filmed "By the Sea" together, reported the Associated Press. The movie was written and directed by Jolie, who cast her Oscar nominated husband as the lead along with herself.

"By the Sea," which is about an estranged married couple struggling with grief, was filmed last August in Malta, a quiet island in seaside France. Jolie set the film in the 1970's and wanted to keep the look of production as real as possible. "It makes me happy when people say the movie looks period but also beautiful," she told Entertainment Weekly. "I was little in the '70s, and to see our old pictures, well... it was not great."

"It's all natural light so it doesn't feel artificial," Jolie said. "When we did scenes, we didn't have big lighting setups in our face for close-ups."

It was a very hard movie to film, especially the heavy moments that sometimes felt real for the couple. "It was an emotionally charged set," she said. "Even though the characters are very different from us, when you act you still express real emotion."

This was the first time in 10 years that the married actors appeared on the screen together since they met on the set of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," according to Vanity Fair.

"By the Sea" opens Nov. 13. Watch the first trailer for the film below!
