Nissan unveils its very own smartwatch, dubbed as "Nissan Nismo Smartwatch" a few days before the Frankfurt Motor Show. The device targets Nissan drivers which can function as a car performance monitoring device.

Smartwatch is in fashion right now with Samsung Galaxy Gear and Sony Smartwatch 2 out in the market. Other smartphone makers reportedly developing their own models are Apple, Google, and LG which might be released in 2014.

Aside from it monitoring the car performance-- specifically the average speeds and fuel comsumption, Nissan Nismo will also measure the driver's heart rate, temperature and other biometrics.

“Wearable technology is fast becoming the next big thing and we want to take advantage of this innovative technology to make our Nismo Brand more accessible," said Gareth Dunsmore, marketing communications general manager at Nissan in Europe, to the Telegraph.

Experts believe that Nissan Nismo could be an important tool to get the drivers connected to their cars.

"Connectivity is the new battleground for car manufacturers," said Chas Hallett, editor-in-chief of What Car?, to BBC.

"In-car internet is coming and now with consumer electronics focusing on watch-based connections, Nissan is getting ahead of the game and joining the two together very cleverly."

The Nissan Nismo smartwatch is the first innovation produced by the Nismo laboratory. The lab plans more functions on the smartwatch in the future such as the ability to connect it to smartphones, and monitor heart and brainwave data which could help identify if the driver is experiencing fatigue, losing concentration, or being emotional.

The Nissan Nismo Smartwatch is available in three colors-white, red, and a combination of red and black. Its battery life can last up to seven days in normal conditions.
