Five people were shot in Gaston County, N.C. on Saturday by a gunman who instigated a shootout with police officers.

Two men died while three were hurt, two of whom were police officers. All three sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were immediately taken to a local hospital, according to The Statesman.

Police were called to a community about 22 miles west of Charlotte at around 9:18 p.m. about a shooting taking place in the area. The shooter, who was carrying a shotgun and a pistol during the incident, has yet to be identified, Chief Bill Melton of the Gaston County Police said, the Associated Press reported.

The third person who was shot was a woman, who also sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Gaston County Police Acting Chief Joseph Ramey told reporters in an impromptu news conference that it was too early to say what led up to the shooting.

Ramey also did not disclose the identities of those involved in the shooting, according to the Gaston Gazette.
