A Delta Air Lines jet made an emergency landing Friday night after flying through a hail storm that damaged the plane and jeopardized pilot visibility.

Flight 1889 from Boston to Salt Lake City was hit with massive baseball sized hail that damaged the plane's nose and windshield, causing the pilots to rely on the control tower and automated guidance to assist their landing, according to the Daily Mail.

While the plane received extensive damage, it was able to land safely.

There were no fatalities, and only one passenger required medical attention, per their own request.

During the flight's difficult journey, many of the passengers on board were crying and holding hands as they hoped for a safe landing, ABC News reported.

"I was messaging my wife, actually. 'Hey, this is pretty scary,'" said Rob Wessman, a passenger on the flight.

Some passengers, like Beau Sorenson, didn't realize the extent of the damage until he was on the ground, according to the Denver Channel.

"I didn't realize that we were in as much danger as we were until we got on the ground and actually saw the damage to the plane. Then I realized we were lucky to be alive," Sorenson said.

An investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration is underway.
