Travelling across the Atlantic could not be so much faster - a trip from New York to London could be taken for just an hour! This could be made into a reality by the new Airbus patent for a hypersonic jet that targets to beat what the Concorde did before.

Airbus has the patent for an "ultra-rapid air vehicle" that could be over four times the speed of sound, according to the approved patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The hypersonic jet targeted by Airbus could reach speeds as high as Mach 4.5 - or 4 1/2 times the speed of sound.

The patent approved in July, details a so-called hypersonic jet that is twice as fast as the retired Concorde supersonic jet no longer in commercial use, according to Time Magazine.

The company that owns Concorde is now part of the Airbus Group, the publication said, adding that with the patent, an aircraft powered by a new hydrogen power system and new turbo jets can be derived.

Deepak Gupta, owner of the Patent Yogi, explained that the new Airbus aircraft could cut down the air travel and make it possible to complete trips like Paris to San Francisco or Tokyo to Los Angeles in just three hours, Business Insider reported.

The approval of the patent would allow Airbus to work on the aircraft design that may take more than a year to finish. The patent includes "a fuselage, a gothic delta wing distributed on either side of the fuselage, and a system of motors able to propel the air vehicle."
