Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" production is well under way with actors already filming in costume for their roles as the future protectors of the planet and its allies. In a recent collection of photos from the set, Michael Rooker can be seen in his full Yondu costume.

Rooker, best known recently for his portrayal of the foul-mouthed anti-hero Merle Dixon on AMC's hit TV series "The Walking Dead," took on the role of the blue-skinned alien mystic who was one of the founding memebers of the original Guardians of the Galaxy team in the comic books. Now he can be seen in the video below as the fully reimagined live-action version of the iconic character for the upcoming film.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" takes place in the same Marvel universe as Joss Whedon's popular "Avengers" franchise. However, the story is set several years in the future after intergalactic travel and colonization is mastered. So don't expect any cameos from Tony Stark or Captain America.

Chris Pratt, from NBC's hit "Parks and Recreation" will take a break from being America's loveable oaf Andy Dwyer and take a swing at protecting the universe alongside Rooker and a slew of other alien super heroes including a talking tree, rumored to be played by "Fast and Furious" star Vin Diesel.

Rooker will be reuniting with director friend James Gunn. The two previously worked on films like "Slither" and "Super" together. The science fiction action comedy will be their latest collaboration together and will help put another installment in the popular Marvel universe franchise. Rooker will help the team battle the threat played by the former "Doctor Who" companion Karen Gillan.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is set to open August 1, 2014. Check out the shots of Rooker as Yondu in the video below, courtesy of PodcastCentral.
