Convicted criminal Robert Crissman casually "walked away" from Armstrong County Jail in Pennsylvania on Thursday and killed a 55-year-old woman before he was re-captured by police on Friday, authorities say, according to the Inquisitr.

Crissman, 38, who was originally jailed for nonviolent crimes, will face new charges as a result of his one-day escape from jail, which include murder, theft and aggravated assault against a police officer. Armstrong County District Attorney Scott Andreassi said Crissman was delivering morning breakfast trays around 6:35 a.m. on Thursday when he escaped from the facility. Crissman walked to a home near the jail, where he allegedly killed Tammy Long.

The inmate knew Terry Slagle, a man who shared the home with Long. After Slagle left the residence, Crissman beat and strangled Long to death, Andreassi said. Despite being on the run for a day, Crissman never got more than 12 miles away from the jail, CNN reported

The convict was captured after he knocked on a woman's door asking for help. She recognized him and called 911. Crissman tried to escape authorities by ramming a police car, only to lose control of the vehicle he was driving. His motive for killing Long is unknown.

"He just walked away," Armstrong County Sheriff William Rupert said of the jailbreak, according to the New York Daily News. Long's autopsy was conducted on Friday.
