Three-year-old Dalis Cox was fatally shot and killed by her 5-year-old brother in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night, reported the Washington Post. The boy was allegedly playing with a gun that he found in the apartment.

Cox's father stated that her mother lives in the apartment complex where the shooting took place, although he does not know who the gun belongs to or where it was found.

Cox was unresponsive when police arrived at the scene on Wednesday night and later died in the hospital, reported TIME.

Her father, Timothy Cox, has two other children.

"Dalis is my life and soul," he said. "I'm at a real loss. People need to make sure they are with their kids at all times. Tomorrow is not promised."

A cousin of the brother said that he knew there was a gun in a bag, but he never witnessed the boy take it out, reported WUSA9.

The family is currently worried about the mental state of the boy and his ability to deal with everything that has occurred.

"This is a good time to look at gun laws," said Corex Cox, the victim's uncle. "If it's this easy to get guns, it's my family today – it will be your family tomorrow."

Friends and family of the girl say that she liked Elmo, bikes and playing on her father's tablet. A GoFundMe page has been set up by Cox's family to pay for her funeral costs.
