The New York Mets backed out of a trade last night that would have landed them outfielder Carlos Gomez. Instead of going to New York, the 29-year-old will head south to Texas.

The Houston Astros acquired Gomez and starting pitcher Mike Fiers from the Brewers on Thursday, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The deal has been confirmed by FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle.

Heyman said the deal is official after Gomez passed the Astros' medical review.

Both Heyman and Drellich are reporting the Brewers are getting prospects in return for Gomez and Fiers. Drellich said the Astros are also getting international slot No. 76 in the deal.

Gomez is batting .262/.328/.423 with 42 runs scored, 8 home runs and 43 home runs in 74 games this season and is under contract in 2016 for $9 million. Fiers, 30, is 5-9 with a 3.89 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 121 strikeouts in 21 starts (118 innings) in 2015 and is under club control through 2019.
