Sony entertainment has confirmed that it will support voice commands and facial recognition via the optional Eye camera peripheral for its upcoming next-generation console the PlayStation 4.

While speaking to the gaming site Polygon, a Sony spokesperson said: "Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm that PlayStatioin Camera allows for voice recognition and we will look forward to sharing more details in the lead up to the launch of PlayStation 4 on November 29."

In a video, shown below, that was played for the crowd at the GameStop Expo in Las Vegas, PlayStation revealed its plans for the Eye Camera, according to The Independent. During the video Sony manager Sean Coleman shows a slide that reads: "From navigational voice commands to facial recognition, the PlayStation Camera adds incredible innovation to your gaming."

Coleman goes on to explain the camera's "new stereoscopic lens can track your body movement in games and even recognize your face for easier system navigation."

It was recently revealed that the PlayStation 4 was originally going to be bundled with the Eye camera. However, in a move that has helped Sony outplay its competitor Microsoft's Xbox One at almost every turn, the company decided to make the camera feature optional, thus dropping its price $100 cheaper than the Xbox One. IGN points out that while the PS4 is now winning the price game, if integration with camera technology is going to be the way of the future for gaming consoles, Sony has shot itself in the foot by making it so that it will never have the same degree of connectivity as the Xbox One. Currently, gamers who wish to see what the PlayStaion 4 can do with a camera enabled can purchase the entire bundle for the same price as the Xbox One, $499 when it comes out in the U.S. on November 15.
