Sean Malone, an actor best known for his role in the 2007 crime drama "Gone Baby Gone," passed away after a drowning incident at the M Street Beach on the Boston harbor, the Associated Press reports. The incident put him into a coma and he succumbed to his injuries yesterday. He was 54 years old.

Malone died at around 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Boston Medical Center, Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald told the AP. He remained in a coma at the hospital after an off-duty firefighter and three teens helped rescue him from his drowning accident last week.

The "Gone Baby Gone" star was swimming off the coast of South Boston and began to struggle after swimming out too far, as previously reported by HNGN. Off-duty firefighter Chris Flaherty was nearby and saw the actor struggling. He grabbed a paddleboard and swam out to rescue him, with the help of three teenage beachgoers.

"Get him to shore as fast as you can," Flaherty told the teens, according to People.

A Boston native, Malone's film credits include David O. Russell's 2010 film "The Fighter" and a small role in the 2014's "The Forger" starring John Travolta, according to IMDB.

The Boston Fire Department's official Twitter page posted a series of tweets announcing Malone's death.

"His family would like to thank the dedicated staff at BMC, Boston EMS, those that rescued Sean and his friends for their support," the statement read.
