A wife stranded in the desert was prepared to die next to her husband, after he had taken a wrong turn while traveling to a casino in Southern California earlier this year.

Dianna Bedwell, 68, and her husband, Cecil "Paul" Knutson, 79, were on their way to a Mother's Day dinner near Palm Springs, Calif., when Knutson took a wrong turn. As he tried to turn the car around, it became stuck on a rock, and the couple was trapped in the middle of a desert on a dirt road 65 miles northeast of San Diego, according to the Associated Press.

At first, Knutson used a cane and walker to get around and move outside the car until neither he nor his wife could walk. The two diabetics continued to survive on oranges, butter cream pie and water in their white Hyundai Sonata until Knutson died in his sleep May 17, according to NewsOxy.

"He just fell asleep," said Bedwell. "I thank God for that. There was no pain, no anger."

A group of ATVs found her severely dehydrated May 24 on a dirt road near a Boy Scout camp. She was airlifted to a hospital where an autopsy revealed that her husband died from a heart attack brought on by the narrowing of his blood vessels, according to the Press Enterprise.

A memorial service for Knutson was held July 10. Bedwell spoke at the service and said she believes her husband sent "angels" to rescue her after he passed away.
