A woman, later identified as Kathryn Steinle, 32, was out for a stroll with her father on Wednesday along the San Francisco waterfront when she was shot and killed by a man in an apparent random shooting. The shooting occurred in the evening at Pier 14, one of the busiest tourist destinations in the city and a place where people gather to take in views and exercise, according to FOX News.

Steinle's father began CPR on the scene before paramedics rushed her to the hospital where she was declared dead. Steinle's mother, Liz Sullivan, told the San Francisco Chronicle that the situation has been unbelievable and surreal.

"I don't think I've totally grasped it," Sullivan said.

Two television news crews reporting on the killing were later mugged at the scene. The robber took cameras from local stations KNTV and KTVU before he jumped into a black BMW and fled, according to the Associated Press.

Witnesses snapped photos of the suspected shooter, later identified as Francisco Sanchez, immediately after the incident. An hour later, thanks to the pictures, police arrested Sanchez while he was walking only a few blocks from the crime scene.

Sanchez is a 45-year-old Texas transplant on probation for an unspecified crime.

Steinle went to high school and previously lived about 40 miles east of San Francisco, the AP reported. She recently moved just blocks from the waterfront and worked for a medical technology company. Authorities have stated that she did not know the suspect.
