Nearly 42 million people will travel away from home for this Fourth of July weekend, according to NewsRoom - the most since 2007.

With lower gas prices and higher airfares, it's only natural that about 85 percent of Independence Day travelers will be driving to their destinations..

If you're planning to head out on the road this weekend, get these apps so you can travel in style.

1. Dark Sky

Start your road trip on the right wheel with this weather app. Dark Sky creates forecasts for your precise location, giving you minute-by-minute predictions for the next hour and hour-by-hour forecasts for the next day and week.

2. Waze

GPS Navigation meets social networking. Waze allows you to tap in your destination (or say it), and user-submitted traffic reports will be sent to you to make sure you're offered the quickest route based on current traffic conditions.

3. TripIt

Before even hitting the road, TripIt saves you the time - and pain - of sifting through your email looking for hotel confirmations and addresses. This app compiles all of your emails into a concise travel plan, which syncs with Google and Apple calendars. It can even be accessed offline for those of you with spotty connections.

4. GasBuddy

Gas Buddy might be the most essential app on this list. This app allows you to find the nearest gas stations and the cheapest prices along your drive. It even includes a trip cost calculator to predict how much your trip will cost you.

5. SitorSquat

Charmin, the toilet company, has created a bathroom locator app for when nature calls. The app - like Waze - works based on user-submitted data; so if the app recommends a public bathroom, you know it's a good one.

6. AAA

Don't let a flat tire or an empty gas tank ruin your holiday getaway. Download this app so if you need roadside assistance, help is just a few clicks away.

7. Candy Crush Saga

Probably one of the most addicting games ever made. Even the Apple Store lists it as one of its essentials." This will keep anyone in the car who's not behind the wheel, occupied for the entire ride.

8. Netflix

If games aren't your fancy, then Netflix is more than an adequate replacement. Watch your favorite TV episodes and movies while you're on the go! You'll need a prior subscription for the service, unfortunately. If you have HBO GO or Hulu Plus, either will serve as perfect alternatives.
