Seth MacFarlane's "Ted 2" underwhelmed in box office ticket sales during its opening weekend, Variety reports. The potty-mouthed teddy bear movie starring Mark Wahlberg was no match for the dinosaurs in "Jurassic World."

The Universal film "Ted 2" debuted over the weekend and brought in just under $33 million in 3,442 movie theaters across the country, failing to miss its Rentrak estimate by approximately $15 million, according to Variety.

"It's hard to maintain that hyper level of excitement once people have seen the talking Teddy bear," Rentrak's Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian told CBS News. "In comedy, it's about inventiveness, newness and the shock value of something original."

"Ted 2" trailed behind "Jurassic World" (Universal) and "Inside Out" (Disney/Pixar), which earned $54.2 million and $52.1 million, respectively, over the same weekend.

"Jurassic World" is now ranked as the fifth-highest domestic grossing release of all time, coming in second only to "The Dark Knight."

"It's forging new ground," Nicholas Carpou, head of domestic distribution at Universal, told Variety. "Every time we turn around there's a new milestone we're checking off."

The original "Ted" movie in 2012 pulled in $20.5 million on its opening day and continued to earn $54.4 million during its opening weekend, Forbes reports. But the sequel cost $68 million to make, so $33 million on opening weekend is still not considered a box office disaster.

Universal cites "sequel-itis" as the film's major weakness in terms of ticket sales. "This year, a lot of sequels are a bit more challenged," Carpou said.
