It's been years since singer and "The X-Factor" judge Demi Lovato graced our screens with her acting abilities, but soon the star will join the cast of "Glee" in a recurring role for season five as Rachel Berry (Lea Michele)'s new friend in New York City, TVLine reports.

Lovato will play the role of Dani, a struggling artist friend of Rachel and Santana (Naya Rivera). TVLine reports that Dani will frequently interact with Adam Lambert's incoming character, whom she will share several musical numbers with. Lovato will appear in at least six episodes of the show, "beginning with the second part of the show's Beatles' tribute, airing Oct. 3," according to TVLine, and her story will be part of a major arc for Lea Michele's character.

Two years ago, Lovato's Disney channel series "Sonny With a Chance" went off the air, the star having left the show to deal with her personal issues following her time in a treatment center. Now that she's clean, sober and stronger than ever, it looks like Lovato is ready to return to television, fittingly in a role where she will be able to showcase her impressive set of pipes.

Tuesday, Lovato will celebrate her 21st birthday in Kenya, as she is currently in the country doing charity work with Save the Children, an international organization that promotes children's rights and helps support kids in developing countries. And unlike many 21-year olds, Lovato won't be celebrating her big day with a crazy party and a handful of drinks.

"I'm not gonna lie. It's going to hurt a little bit," she told Cosmopolitan magazine for her August cover issue interview. "Sometimes I wake up and I'm like, why can't I be normal? Why can't I just...you know? But I can't, so I don't. I look at birthdays as celebrating another year of your life. You've made it another year, an entire year. Some people don't make it to 21."

Lovato has struggled with addiction, self-harm, mental illness and an eating disorder, yet her perseverance has inspired millions of fans around the world to "stay strong" and overcome their own battles.

Lovato will be reprising her role as a judge and mentor on this season of "The X-Factor," alongside fellow judges Simon Cowell, Paulina Rubio and Kelly Rowland, and we're expecting some cross-promotion to happen between these two FOX shows!
