Roland Emmerich needed 20 years to launch a sequel to his 1996 movie "Independence Day" and it's been aptly titled it, "Independence Day Resurgence."
The film will hit the big screen on June 24, 2016, nearly 20 years to the day that the original touched down in theaters. "Independence Day" earned more than $817 million worldwide, which was the second-highest grossing movie of all time.
"Resurgence" will welcome back Vivica A. Fox, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch and Bill Pullman, who played President Thomas J. Whitmore. New cast additions include Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

The sequel will revolve around the nations of Earth collaborating on an immense defense system to protect the planet using recovered alien technology. But the aliens are returning with advanced and unprecedented force. Only a few brave men and women can bring the world back from the brink of extinction.
Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin co-wrote the first draft for "Resurgence" followed by rewrites from James Vanderbilt, James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright. Fox also revealed first looks at the Moon Tug on Twitter.
