A Wauwatosa plain clothed detective was shot and wounded by a suspect on Milwaukee's northwest side.

Two plain clothed detectives and one uniformed officer were following up a burglary at a Milwaukee apartment complex near 60th Street and Good Hope Road when the suspect opened fired in the parking lot, wounding one of the officers, Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn said.

One of the detectives, aged 52, was shot by 20-year-old Najee Harmon, who is already in police custody after a thorough search, WISN-TV reported.

The Police searched the area for hours, sending warnings to the people to stay away and stay inside their homes to avoid danger.

"The public has got to be alert and report suspicious information to 911," Flynn said. "This suspect is armed and extremely dangerous."

The wounded detective of 25 years of service "has come through the surgery" and is currently in serious but stable condition, Chief Barry Weber said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Harmon, Channel 3000 reported.

"Today's shooting of a Wauwatosa police detective on Milwaukee's northwest side is both alarming and deplorable. My thoughts are with the wounded officer and his family," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said, Journal Sentinel reported. "This incident is a reminder of the dangers our police officers face. I greatly appreciate the work of all the professionals who protect our community."
