The second season of the HBO original series "True Detective" returns this Sunday with an entirely new cast. The series is an anthology series, similar to "American Horror Story," that will feature a new cast of actors and characters each season. Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell will take over from last season's stars, Mathew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

Vaughn will play Frank Semyon, an enterprising but beleaguered mobster, while Farrell will play tormented detective Ray Velcoro. Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams round out the all-star cast as troubled war veteran Paul Woodrugh and Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County sheriff's detective, according to Fox News.

Season One of the TV series was nominated for 12 Emmy's, including outstanding writing, outstanding drama, and acting nominations for Harrelson and McConaughey. The show went home with five awards, including outstanding cinematography and outstanding directing.

With such a successful first season, it will be hard for the second installment to live up to expectations. Season two does not meet those stellar expectations, according to "The New York Times" TV reviewer, Alexandra Stanley.

"What's hard to dispute is that second seasons, like second novels, can easily disappoint .... The only remnant of the first season is the dark imagination of its creator and writer, Nic Pizzolatto. And this time, Mr. Pizzolatto doubles down on much of what made the first season so distinctive," Stanley said.

"That doesn't make it twice as good, though. Not nearly."

"True Detective" premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO.
