Sean Penn and his fiancée Charlize Theron have decided to call off their engagement.

The couple has been friends for decades and have been romantically together for almost a year and a half, but multiple sources have confirmed to Us Weekly today that they've decided to end things.

Apparently, they realized their romance was over following their recent trip to the Cannes Film Festival in South France. Theron, 39, was the one who made the decision to end things with the 52-year-old Oscar winner, but the reason why is still unknown.

At the time of the engagement in December 2014, Us Weekly exclusively reported that it wasn't a very elaborate proposal.

"There's no ring," an insider said. "But they are committed."

Their last public appearance was at Vienna Life Ball on May 16, according to E! News.

The breakup is surprising many fans because of how in love they still seemed at the "Mad Max: Fury Road" premiere in LA last month. The two were seen kissing all night.

Neither Penn nor Theron has made any comments about the split yet.
