Moe was the Westbrook's family pet for 13 years before dying in April, and leaving his owners grief-stricken. Norfolk, Virginia's Mary and Roberto Westbrook, along with their 3-year-old son, Luke, continue to miss the beagle every single day.

The young boy was constantly asking his parents if Moe was ever coming back, according to Hampton Roads. So his mother told him that they could write letters to the dog.

"Because you can't fool a 3-year-old, we take the letter to our mailbox," wrote Mary in Distinction. She would address the letter to "Moe Westbrook, Doggie Heaven, Cloud 1," and would usually write about how much Luke missed Moe.

When night would come—and Luke was fast asleep—Mary would then take the letters out of the mailbox. However, she failed to do this one time and realized too late that the mailman already took it along with her other letters.

"I figured someone would just throw it away once it got to the post office. It didn't even have a stamp," she told Hampton Roads.

This week, however, the family received a surprise—Moe sent his reply!

The letter, which had quirky handwriting as if a canine actually wrote it, said, "I'm in doggy heaven. I play all day, I am happy. Thank you 4 being my friend. I wuv you Luke."

"The kindness of this stranger gutted me," said Mary about the unexpected letter. "Receiving the note reminded me of the goodness of people and just how big a small gesture can really be. Here's to Moe, in doggie heaven, and thoughtful postal workers everywhere."
