Back in the '90s, Crystal Pepsi, a clear soda that retained the taste of original Pepsi, made a splash among teenagers and young adults. However, the beverage quietly disappeared from store shelves a few years later. But thanks to an online campaign launched by Kevin Strahle, a competitive eater and self-confessed fan of the drink, Crystal Pepsi may be set for a return.

"We've had customers ask us to bring back their favorite products before, but never with your level of enthusiasm and humor," said a letter from Pepsi sent to Strahle, who posted it to his Twitter account. "We definitely hear you and all your followers and we think you'll all be happy with what's in store."

Following this, a representative from PepsiCo confirmed that the letter Strahle received is authentic. "We think Crystal Pepsi fans are going to be happy with what we have planned," she told Ad Age. However, the rep did not elaborate on the details.

Ad Age believes that PepsiCo is following the lead of Coca-Cola, which came out with a limited release of its Surge soda last year through Amazon. The product immediately sold out, according to Consumerist. Like Crystal Pepsi, the citrus drink also came out in the '90s.

When Crystal Pepsi was launched in 1992, Coca-Cola came out with its own version, Tab Clear, which the two companies touted as healthier soda alternatives because of the lack of color. "With the drinks' clearness being equated with purity and health, they were all the rage for roughly a year or so before disappearing quietly from view," reported Bustle.

Crystal Pepsi has been rumored for a comeback as far back as 2013, but Pepsi has not made any confirmation of it until today.
