A little more than a week after Apple CEO Tim Cook discussed the idea of wearable tech with AllThingsD, calling it "profoundly interesting," new rumors about Apple's foray into wearable tech devices, the iWatch, are spreading.
According to CNET, Apple has filed a trademark on the "iWatch" brand in Russia. Russian newspaper Izvestia reported Wednesday that Apple Inc. filed the trademark with the country's patent and trademark office, Rospatent. This has caused many to speculate that the company's long-rumored and highly-anticipated wearable smart watch is just around the corner.
Rumors about the iWatch's approach have been popping up a lot recently. There was the iPhone video where people speculated that a subliminal iWatch message was placed and the patent Apple Inc. put on flexible glass. Although Apple has not officially confirmed it has plans to launch any wearable tech to compete with the Google Glass, these and other rumors are leading people to think the iWatch is an inevitability.
It's worth noting Apple has merely put a patent on the iWatch name. Like every major company, Apple files for trademarks on brands left and right. It's unclear if the rumors are a result of the Apple developing an iWatch or if the company locking down the name is a reaction to the rumors in case they decide in the future they'd like to develop wearable tech and market it with the familiar rumored name.
In other words, Apple's trademark patent application could be the first solid indication the company is developing wearable tech. On the other hand, it may just be a reaction to the rumors that Apple is developing wearable tech. In fact, some patented products don't hit the market until years after the initial patent goes out.
In any case, fans of Apple who are curious about what they'll do with the iWatch and how it will change their productivity might not have to wait too long.
