Two friends of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the suspect behind the Boston Marathon bombings, pleaded not guilty in court to charges that allege they hindered the investigation into the deadly attack, SeattlePi.com reported.
Robel Phillipos and Dias Kadyrbayev were arraigned in U.S. District Court on Friday. Their charges include lying to investigators and conspiring to obstruct justice.
The arraignment of a third friend, Azamat Tazhayakov, was scheduled to later on Friday because his lawyer was late to court.
Phillopos, of Cambridge, Massachussetts, was indicted last month for two counts of lying to authorities. His lawyer said Phillopos was innocent and will make clear that he should have never been prosecuted. He faces 16 years in prison for his charge.
Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov, both originally from Kazakhstan, are accused with destroying evidence as Tsarnaev ran from authorities following the marathon bombings, killing three people and injuring more than 260.
Both men reportedly received a text message from Tsarnaev that said "go to my room and take what's there," according to court documents.
Kadyrbayev and Tazhayakov both face 25 years in prison or deportation for their charge. Kadyrbayev's lawyer, Robert Stahl, claimed his client had no knowledge of what Tsarnaev was doing that day.
"There was no criminal intent from him to help Dzhokhar, no obstruction of justice in any way," Stahl said.
All three men have been cleared of any suspected involvement with the bombings. Prosecutors plan to bring in 20 witnesses to the trial which should take about two weeks.
Dzhokar is suspected of working with his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, to carry out the two bombings that killed three people and injured hundreds during the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013.
His brother died as they were trying to evade authorities. The former University of Massachusetts student was found in hiding in a boat after a door-to-door manhunt in Watertown, Massachussets and has been in federal custody ever since.
