"Fifty Shades of Grey" fans have waited for almost a year to find out who would be cast as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. Earlier E.L. James announced on Twitter that the coveted roles would go to "Pacific Rim" actor Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson.
Neither one was a fan-favorite but their names popped up early last week as serious contenders to play the kinky couple. There were several reports that executives and producers were eyeing Hunnam and Johnson to star in the movie.
According to Variety, Hunnam had initially turned down the role but then changed his mind. After announcing the couple on Twitter James has been bombarded with comments that she and "Team 50" made the wrong decision.
Fans believe Johnson looks too old to play Steele (even though she is 23) and not innocent enough to play the virginal college student. A lot of fans also think she looks nothing like the character from the book.
Steele is described as a brown-haired, pale girl with big blue eyes. She's pretty but overly pretty and a bit scruffy. She blushes easily, is clumsy and has very little fashion sense. Steele is also described as petite; Christian Grey towers over her.
Johnson is said to be around 5'7 and Hunnam is 6'1 so he won't be towering over her like it's described in the book. Johnson has darkened her hair for other movie roles but fans still don't think she was the best choice.
Hunnam may be a bit too rugged with all his facial hair and shoulder length locks but if he cuts his hair he could definitely pull off playing the billionaire. Physically he does have Grey's body type.
Even though there's been some backlash over the choices there are some fans who point out that "Team 50" probably know exactly what they're doing and to trust their decision. Hunnam and Johnson could very well surprise everyone and make the perfect couple.
