"Real Housewives of New Jersey" stars Teresa and Joe Giudice are trying to dig themselves out of some legal mess. The reality couple has been charged with 39 different crimes ranging from tax evasion to back fraud and could face up to 50 years in prison if convicted, the Daily Mail reports.

According to the newspaper, a federal jury released an "indictment which details charges of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, making false statements on loan applications and bankruptcy fraud."

The charges stem from 2001 to 2008 - prior to the couple appearing on the reality show - when they allegedly defrauded the IRS and several banks. US Attorney Paul Fishman told the Daily Mail that the couple tried to illegally obtain mortgages and other loans from several banks by "intentionally overestimating their incomes in order to get more money."

Reportedly when Teresa filed for a loan in 2001 for $121,000 she falsely  put down that she worked as executive assistant and submitted fake W-2 forms and paystubs.

"The indictment returned today alleged the Giudices lied to the bankruptcy court, to the IRS and to a number of banks," US Attorney Paul Fishman said. "Everyone has an obligation to tell the truth when dealing with the courts, paying their taxes and applying for loans or mortgages. That's reality."

Teresa posted on her Twitter page that the ordeal was a hard to deal with.

"Today is a most difficult time for our family. I support Joe, and as a wonderful husband and father, I know he wants only the best for our lovely daughters and me. I am committed to my family and intend to maintain our lives in the best way possible, which includes continuing my career," she tweeted. "As a result, I am hopeful that we will resolve this matter with the Government as quickly as possible. Thank you for all your kind wishes, prayers and support."

Her attorney said she will plead not guilty and that "we look forward to vindicating her," the Celebuzz reports.

Neither Teresa nor Joe has been arrested but both are due back in court Tuesday morning in New Jersey.
