A California man won a million-dollar Powerball jackpot only to lose his ticket when it came time to claim his prize.

The deadline for the unnamed man to claim the $1,098,624 passed on Thursday and now all chances of collecting his winnings are gone, California Lottery officials told KACB.

The unlucky man purchased the ticket at a supermarket in Rosemead on Sept. 13. His ticket numbers- 37, 6, 1, 53 and 16 were all a match except for Powerball number 27.

But he apparently didn't know he won because the state Lottery's Santa Fe Springs District Office had to track him down by matching surveillance footage from the supermarket to the ticket's time stamp, the station reported.

It wasn't until the man saw his face on the news that he came forward- with nothing to prove he won.

Some $800 million in California Lottery winnings has gone unclaimed in its 30-year history, officials said.

The unclaimed money will now go to California's public schools.
