The article was corrected as per a statement from the St. Louis Police Department. The Webster Grove office has been a member of the force for seven years, not five years, as previously reported.

After midnight, as police confronted the "dwindling" number of protesters in front of the Ferguson police station, shots rang out, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Two officers were hit - one from Ferguson County police and the other from the Webster Groves department.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar spoke at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where both officers are receiving treatment. Belmar stated that three shots had been fired and that both officers received "very serious wounds," according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The 32-year-old Webster Grove officer, on the force for seven years, was shot in the face. The 41-year-old Ferguson officer, on the force for 14 years, was hit in the shoulder.

Belmar said no suspects have been identified, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, but he believes these two officers were targeted. Both had been standing in a group when they were shot.

Area police departments sent officers to Ferguson earlier in the night as 60 to 70 protesters arrived in front of the police department building, blocking roads and sidewalks, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Protesters seemed to be divided, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. One group was unhappy with the resignations of City Manager John Shaw and Police Chief Thomas Jackson and gathered, chanting in unison. Another group of protesters was angry, violent and even fighting amongst themselves.

"I've said many times we cannot sustain this without problems and that's not a reflection of those expressing their first amendment rights," Belmar said, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "But this is a very dangerous environment for our officers to work in."

South Florissant Road in front of the police station was closed and declared a crime scene. Belmar said the shots came across Florissant Road. Witnesses on the scene told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the shots came from a block of homes on Tiffin Avenue that intersects West Florissant Avenue, where the police department is located.

The only arrests made so far are those that occurred before the gunfire.
