The now infamous home invasion caught incidentally on a Millburn, N.J. "nanny cam" of a man breaking and entering before beating a young mother in front of her child is not the first attack of suspect Shawn Curtis, Philly.com reports, as the 42-year old was also arrested two decades ago for the same crime.

The brutal beating and burglary caught on camera June 21 has left Curtis held on a third of a million dollar bail ($750,000) in the Essex County Jail for serious charges, including armed robbery, burglary and attempted murder of the victim. Police say Curtis's past attack helped them connect the two cases, though Curtis has a lengthy rap sheet.

In 2009, Curtis committed three burglaries in the span of two weeks in Essex, Mercer, and Middlesex Counties, according to court records. And in 1991, Curtis broke into a home and hid in the closet when the homeowner's 34-year old daughter came home with her own daughter and niece.

"She entered the master bedroom; he jumped out of the closet. He took her by surprise," Delran Detective Sgt. Jeffrey Hubbs said Wednesday.

Curtis pushed the woman on the bed, punched, choked and dragged her to the top of the stairs leading to the basement, then snatched her keys and drove away in her 1984 Ford Station wagon. Curtis was arrested the next day, caught trying to sell the car, and was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The events of the 1991 burglary and attack eerily echo what happened on June 21, though this time, Curtis's actions were caught on camera for the country to see, and the nation was shocked by the footage that the victim allowed to be released in hopes it would help police find the suspect.

At around 10 a.m. on June 21, Curtis broke into the Millburn, N.J. home through a back door, approached the victim and began to beat her while her 3-year old sat and witnessed the violence on a couch nearby.

"I knew that if I started screaming, my daughter would too, and I was afraid she would get hurt," the young mother told reporters following the incident. "I took it. I didn't cry the entire time."

Her 1-year old child was sleeping upstairs, and neither children were harmed during the attack. Police have chosen to only show a small segment of the 4-minute video, which is disturbing.
