Skype celebrates a 100 million milestone of Android installs with the  launch of a  redesigned, faster and more reliable 4.0 version for Android mobile OS.

Skype, audio- and video-calling service, surpassed 100 million Android installs and celebrated by launching a redesigned version of the app for Android users. The new Skype 4.0, available online on Google Play Store, is designed to deliver an "app that makes your interactions easier and puts conversations first," the company said in a blog post.

Derek Snyder, Head of Mobile Marketing for Skype. London, UK, wrote in the company's Big Blog that the revamped version of the app is not just a "makeover," but is built from scratch to "be faster and more reliable." The new design of the app gives "clean new look listing" of users' recent conversations upon launch, which helps in  quick response.

"We didn't just give Skype a makeover, we rebuilt it from the ground up to be faster and more reliable," Snyder wrote in the blog post. "We went beyond design and fundamentally changed the way Skype was built, focusing much of our effort on stability, performance, and load time."

With just a tap, users can catch up and reply and strike a conversation. The options on the new Skype app remain simple with just three tabs namely, Recent, Favorites and People. When users  tap or swipe over to the Favorites or People (contacts) tab and select a contact, it opens a messaging window with an option for an audio or a video call right at the bottom of the screen. This allows users to operate with just one hand even if holding a large-screen smartphone.

The company promises to launch more updates in the coming months and year ahead. Skype  mapped the future goals for its mobile app last month with certain advancements including increasing the performance and the quality of the app without affecting the battery life.

Skype also launched video messaging for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Blackberry, which allows users to send short video messages to friends even if they are offline.
