"X-Men: First Class" introduced Moira MacTaggert as a love interest for Charles Xavier. Screenwriter Simon Kingberg hopes to further explore their relationship in the next "X-Men" film.

Rose Byrne will reprise her role as the CIA agent Moira in "X-Men: Apocalypse," according to Entertainment Weekly. The movie will jump about 20 years after "First Class" to the early 1980s.

"She's a significant character in the movie," Kinberg, who wrote the "Apocalypse" script, told Entertainment Weekly. "We ended 'First Class' with Charles having wiped portions of her memory of her experience with the X-Men. They are, essentially, strangers to her when she meets them."

Kinberg, who also wrote 2014's "X-Men: Days of Future Past," gave no other details about Byrne's role in the new film. It will delve deeper into the connection between Moira and Professor X, played by James McAvoy.

"It's certainly a rich relationship that we started to dig into in 'First Class,' and would like to mine more in this one," the screenwriter said.

"Apocalypse" will wrap up the storylines of the "First Class"-era characters, including Charles, Erik Lensherr a.k.a. Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Raven a.k.a. Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and Hank a.k.a. Beast (Nicholas Hoult).

"They're such young actors and young characters, so there's a lot more story to tell. But as a first phase of their lives, there is this feeling of closure by the end of the movie," Kinberg said.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" will premiere on May 27, 2016.

Byrne next stars in "Spy" opposite her "Bridesmaids" co-star Melissa McCarthy. The movie opens on May 22, 2015.
