Redbox announced Monday that its DVD rental prices will see a 25 percent increase starting Dec. 2.

The increase will result in DVD rentals costing $1.50 instead of $1.20 starting next week, according to San Jose Mercury News. The goal for Redbox is to try to make money from those who still prefer renting movie discs over using Netflix and other internet video streaming services.

DVDs are not the only products experiencing a jack-up in rental prices, as Redbox is also raising the price of its Blu-Ray rental rates from $1.50 to $2.00 (a 33 percent increase). The move will take place a month before Redbox plans to increase video game rentals as well. Starting Jan. 6, renting video games at its kiosks will cost $3.00 instead of $2.00, which is a 50 percent increase.

The price change is also the first time that Redbox has raised its prices since 2011, PCWorld reported. The company currently stands against little competition in the physical disc rental department, as BlockBuster closed its stores in late 2013 due to Netflix's growing popularity.

While fans of physical discs may be unhappy to hear about the rental price jump, Redbox does have some good news for the next few months, such as the introduction of its "recommendation engine" that operates similar to the Netflix feature, as well as the promise of a more efficient process for stocking its kiosks.
