A 16-year-old with a "time bomb" heart condition collapsed and died while walking through an Ohio haunted house set up for Halloween on Friday night.

Christian Faith Benge, a sophomore at New Miami High School, died from a pre-existing medical condition while attending Halloween attractions at Land of Illusion Haunted Scream Park in Middletown, Ohio, with a group of about 100 friends and family members, according to New York Daily News.

The teenager was inside one of the park's haunted houses when she suddenly collapsed and fell to the ground. Although the victim's mother attempted to perform CPR instantly, her heart had reportedly already stopped, family members said.

"She got halfway through and just collapsed," Betty Benge, the teen's grandmother, told the Journal-News. "She was almost through it."

The teen was then rushed to a nearby Atrium Medical Center but doctors failed to save her, and she was eventually pronounced dead, according to The Huffington Post.

Born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, which prevents the lungs from developing normally, the teen suffered from serious health problems since she was born, her grandfather Ernest Benge told WCPO, adding that the 16-year-old had been living with only one functional lung and that part of her heart was enlarged to four times its normal size.

"They said she was like a time bomb," Betty Benge said.

An autopsy is now underway to determine the patient's exact cause of death, according to the Warren County Coroner's Office.

"Is this something that occurred because she had a heightened sense of fear? Or is this something that she could have been walking down the street and this occurred? We may never know that, but there's really no way to medically pinpoint that," Doyle Burke, Warren County chief investigator, told WCPO.

But Warren County Coroner Russell Uptegrove told Cincinnati.com that it's possible that the teen was scared to death.

"We may never know for sure, but because her death involved heart problems, the fear in places like that could have pushed her over the edge' so to speak," Uptegrove said.

Land of Illusion, which features "four enormous haunted houses and one terrifying haunted trail," boasts of "live spooks, lunatics and chainsaw-wielding madmen" on its website.

The owner of the attraction Brett Oakley stated that no "injury accident" had occurred on the premises of the park.

Meanwhile, the teen's death was described as "sudden" and "unexpected" by her grandfather.

"I did CPR until the paramedics arrived, and then I just trusted God. He has an ultimate plan. It was just time," Christian's mother, Jean Benge, told WCPO. "Because of her faith in Christ, I know she's home."
