In a horrifying tale of events, a 35-year-old Kansas man has been charged with rape and aggravated burglary of a 100-year-old woman during a break-in at her home, the Associated Press reported.

Kasey Nesbitt, who has been documented by police as a gang member, was charged in a Wichita courtroom on Wednesday after forensic evidence linked the suspect to the old woman's rape. The main motive for the break-in, however, was probably burglary, police said.

When Nesbitt was identified as a suspect in the rape case, he was already being held in jail since Monday for an unrelated burglary, WIBW.com reported.

On Sept. 29, a group of male intruders forced their way into the unidentified victim's house in Wichita through her back door while she was asleep, Kansas authorities said. They allegedly hung around for a period of several hours.

At around 9 p.m., the elderly resident was woken up by strangers milling around her house. She was eventually able to walk into a neighbor's home for help on the following day at around 7 a.m., according to UK MailOnline.

A medical examination confirmed that the woman had been sexually violated, with Wichita Police Captain Troy Livingston describing her as a brave and strong woman for being able to provide them with information on the suspects.

Currently, Nesbitt is being held in the Sedgwick County Jail on $250,000 bond. Although there was no indication of an attorney in online jail records, he is due back in court on Oct. 29.

If convicted, prosecutors plan to ask for a harsher sentence for Nesbitt because the victim was particularly vulnerable, KWCH reported.

"All rape is a deplorable crime, but when you look at the age of our victim it becomes a little bit more concerning and a little bit more disturbing," Livingston said. "It's a vile crime, and the fact that somebody victimized a 100-year-old female is a little bit harder for the detectives to really grasp."

Nesbitt has a lengthy criminal record going back to 2000, which includes multiple convictions on burglary and theft charges. According to court records obtained by The Wichita Eagle, he had been released from prison in January 2013.
