A TV show based on the comic book character Supergirl is headed to the small screen. According to Entertainment Weekly, CBS has given Warner Bros. a series commitment for the show based on the DC Comic character.

"The drama tells the story of Kara Zor-El, who was born on the planet Krypton, but escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she's been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin Superman," EW wrote. "But now, at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be."

According to Deadline, Greg Berlanti, executive producer of "Arrow" and "The Flash" as well as "New Normal's" Ali Alder and Sarah Schechter, will executive produce the series. "Supergirl" will be the fifth comic book TV show this season by Warner Bros.

"Arrow" is returning for a third season with "The Flash," "Constantine," "Gotham" and "iZombie" all premiering in the fall. According to EW, Warner Bros. is also behind "Titans" and "Lucifer."

Marvel also has a few comic book shows on TV, including "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and "Agent Carter," starring Hayley Atwell. The studio also has "Daredevil," "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage," and "Iron Fist" over on Netflix.

This will be the second time Supergirl has appeared on television. Actress Laura Vandervoort played the character in The CW's "Smallville." In the comics, Kara Zor-El was one of the last survivors of Argo City on Krypton after an explosion left the planet drifting through space. She was eventually forced to leave and was sent to Earth to be raised by Superman.

Supergirl has powers similar to Superman and also dons an identical costume in the comics.
