Marvel co-creator Stan Lee revealed The Falcon’s takeover of the red, white and blue shield from Steve Rodgers is only temporary for the “Captain America” series.

Lee spoke to ComicBook.com about the Marvel franchise during Salt Lake Comic Con. The comic book creator promised the original Captain America wasn’t “lost.”

“He took over for Captain America? Well, that was a temporary thing,” Lee told Comic Book. “It’s not as though we’ve lost Captain America. I promise you he’ll be back. See, they make all these changes…”

Lee went on to explain why Marvel is constantly changing up their storylines and franchise leads.

“You see, when you have a comic book company, you’re publishing so many books every month, and it’s month after month after month, and you want to keep the readers,” the Marvel co-creator told Comic Book. “And when you have movies you have one movie after the other, just like the James Bond movie every couple of years.

“And you have these conferences and you say, ‘What can I do that will surprise the fans and make them want to learn more about the characters?’ So you say, ‘Let’s kill one of them and we’ll bring them back to life,’ or, ‘Let’s take this one who’s an American and make him Chinese.’ I mean anything that they think of that they figure will make the fans talk about it and get interested.”

In other “Captain America” news, directors Anthony and Joe Russo recently spoke to Hypable about the third franchise installment. Anthony claimed they’re aiming to surprise viewers whom have remained loyal to the franchise.

“Moving into Cap 3, we have the advantage of having this brand that continues to build loyalty and win fans,”Anthony told Hypable. “It gives you license to take them places. It’s a very valuable thing as far as where we can take the stories.”

Joe claimed the next franchise installment will stay true the tone of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” left off on. However, it doesn’t mean the directing duo won’t bring a fresh perspective to “Captain America 3.”

“We’re not gonna get away from some of that tone, we like a very grounded approach to the character,” Joe said. “We like long lenses. We like handheld camera work. That stuff’s not going away. But what can we bring that’s fresh to the table from an execution standpoint, from a relationship standpoint, and from a storytelling standpoint? You don’t want them to say, ‘I saw this movie two years ago and it was called The Winter Soldier.’”

“Captain America 3” is slated to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
