Celebrity chef Todd English, owner of a number of trendy American restaurants including Figs in Boston, was arrested on Sunday on a charge of intoxicated driving in Southampton on New York's Long Island, according to The Associated Press.

English was arraigned on a misdemeanor charge and released on $1,500 bail following his early morning arrest, Southampton police said, the AP reported.

English's car was seen drifting on a county road around 3:30 a.m. local time, police said, according to the AP.

English's attorney, Edward Burke Jr., said in a statement his client was not intoxicated while driving, the AP reported.

"We adamantly deny the allegations levied against Mr. English and look forward to addressing this matter in a court of law," the statement said, according to the AP.

English, who is from Boston, has opened restaurants all over the world and currently operates more than a dozen eateries, including The Todd English Food Hall at the Plaza Hotel in New York, the AP reported.

He is also the author of several cookbooks, and is the host of the television show "Food Trip With Todd English."

In September 2009, his former fiancee was charged with assault, and authorities accused her of hitting him with a metal wrist watch, leaving him needing multiple stitches, according to the AP. The couple had been scheduled to get married, but English called the wedding off.

A judge in January 2010 closed the case without prison or probation based on her going through anger management and performing community service, the AP reported.
