Comedienne Joan Rivers was reportedly rushed to a Manhattan hospital after she stopped breathing during surgery. According to TMZ, the 81-year-old cohost of E!'s "Fashion Police" was undergoing a procedure on her vocal chords at a New York City clinic on Tuesday morning (Aug. 28).

Sources told the site Rivers suddenly stopped breathing during the surgery and was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital. There is no immediate update on her condition. According to TMZ, someone placed a 911 call around 9:39 a.m. and said, "We have somebody in either cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest."

Rivers' daughter, Melissa, is said to be on her way to New York and, so far, has not released a statement on her mother's condition. 

Update: The New York Police Department told TMZ that Rivers is in critical condition and at one point her heart stopped beating. The site claims it's not clear if doctors were able to revive the comedienne.
